The Winter Break-a-Brush! Painting Workshop Program with David Kearns

This Winter, we're looking forward to hosting another exciting workshop series: during 6 workshops, we profile some wonderful painters that changed the course of art and also cover key painting subjects!

Saturday 03 Feb 2018 - In the footsteps of the Group of Seven: Whether inspired by the stark and mystical landscapes of Lawren Harris, the lyrical styles of J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer or the consummate paint mastery of A.Y. Jackson, join us for a day in the company of the most legendary group of Canadian painters.

Saturday 10 Feb 2018 - Limitless Colour: Paintings are invariably more than they seem. This workshop explains how colours work together in practice and develops some key approaches, such as demystifying and mixing for experienced artists and beginners alike. Instruction and coaching will include sound colour theory and a major part will be its application in practical art. Colour takes paintings to giddy heights or sends them to the depths with little in between!

Saturday 24 Feb 2018 - From Klimt to Klee – Expressionism in the 20th century: Through these two very different artists, Gustav Klimt and Paul Klee, we see breadth and diversity in the explosion of creativity in Austria and Germany through first part of the 20th Century, for a fascinating day in the company of Germanic Expressionists. The National Gallery has just acquired two additional Klimts now on display in the permanent collection: https://gallery.us5.list-manage.com/track/click?u=24cd591dea258ee4881d06784&id=04ad778c94&e=182e6d970c

Saturday 03 Mar 2018 - Multiple perspectives - The perfect....imperfect: This workshop will focus on perspective in a range of real-world environments. Single, two and three-point linear perspective will be covered and perhaps equally importantly, approaches on when to follow the rules and when to break them. We'll investigate how perspective helps with various subjects and styles.

Saturday 17 Mar 2018 - The 100th Break-a-Brush workshop – profiling some of our favorite artists and techniques! Marking our 100th Break-a-Brush workshop, David will review some of his most his favored painting processes and techniques as well as comment on artists that have influenced his work. He will take requests for demos and segments from the participants!

Saturday 24 Mar 2018 - People in their environments This workshop will explore creating vivid living compositions in dry media and paint, working from both live model and photo references. The workshop will exploring people in real world situations - placing people into scenes and compositions.

All Workshops are from 09:30 am to 04:30 pm at Rothwell United Church, 42 Sumac Street, Ottawa, K1J 6P7. $100.00 per session or $75.00 each for bookings of 4 or more sessions. Additional details are found on our website: http://www.breakabrush.com/workshops/

These workshops appeal to a wide range of skill levels: from relative beginners to practiced artists wanting to pursue a new style. Together we will dispel myths and develop sound practices, creativity and expression! France and I would like to invite you to join us for an exciting Winter workshop program.

Opportunity for members

Call for proposals  - Creative Reactions Ottawa 2018

Creative Reactions is looking for artists in the visual arts domain, spoken word (and others!) for the 2018 edition of the Pint of Science festival and its Creative Reactions event in your area.

We are looking for emerging or established artists from Ottawa/Gatineau region. The selected artists will participate in the festival on May 19th in a café/bar gallery in Ottawa centre (place to be specified soon!).

Mission
For organization purposes, our society needs to put labels on things and phenomena. This human impulse generates invisible barriers between disciplines; distinctions that stand against interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity. Nowadays, it seems unlikely to find a profile like that of Isaac Newton, emblematic figure in science, who was all at once a philosopher, a mathematician, a physicist, an alchemist, an astronomist and a theologist.

Time has come to end prejudice and break down the barriers, for this kind of diversity may prove essential for future generations. This is the aim of Creative Reactions, born from the desire to reintegrate art and science using creativity as their common ground. Our principal objective is to use art as a bridge to create visual communication between these two rather distinct universes.

This project also acts as support for science outreach, offering its public a different face of the scientific world. The Pint of Science festival allows accessibility to scientific concepts and Creative Reactions offers to go even further, escaping conventions through a journey inside the imagination of the participating artists.

This event, that sees itself as a celebration of interdisciplinarity, consists of matching artists with academic researchers around very specific themes: the brain, atoms, galaxies, the body and society.

Artists are invited to enter the world of researchers, to discuss their research topics and produce works revolving around this exchange.

This collaboration between artists and researchers is crystalizes in a cultural event whose main and central element is the vernissage of the artistic pieces, presenting the intertwining of these two universes so close and so different at the same time.

Application
Your file shall include:
● Up-to-date Curriculum Vitae
● 3-5 images of recent work (less than 2 years), good resolution, or recordings/text, links to youtube video
● Artistic work
● Website or Facebook page
● Press kit if applicable
● A short statement explaining why you want to participate in Creative Reactions

Conditions:
● Deadline extended! You have until January 28th to apply online.
● A pre-determined committee will proceed to select the applicants. The committee’s decision will be irrevocable.
● Creative Reactions will take care of the promotion, advertising, organization, logistics and expenses of the vernissage and exhibition
● The artists are free to sell their work. No percentage will be charged to the artists.
● The artistic pieces will have to be ready and available for hanging at the date of the exhibition May 19th.
● Each artist will produce one piece of 36’’x36’’. For 3D works, the piece will have to be transportable and have a suitable fixture or base.

On Tuesday, JANUARY 9, 2018

Please retrieve the works that have been hanging for the past two months and/or bring in new paintings (or other two dimensional art) for the North Gloucester Library, 2036 Ogilvie Road, Ottawa, K1J 7N8.

The coordinators will be at the Library between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30.a.m. For those who are dropping off art work, please arrive between 10:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. so that your work can be documented and hung before 11:30 a.m.. For those who are picking up only, please arrive no later than 11:15 a.m.

These new pieces will hang for two months.
The next change-over will be on Tuesday, MARCH 13, 2018.

If you are interested in exhibiting, an advance email, on or before Wednesday, JANUARY 3, 2018 to Christine Gendron, christinegendron@sympatico.ca, indicating the number of works and their sizes, would be helpful. Or, just show up at the date, but risk being turned away.

Please be prepared to record your paintings with: Title, Medium, Size, and Price along with your name, phone number and e-mail. You can bring up to 3 paintings although, depending on the total number received, not all may be accepted. North Gloucester Library can accommodate 20 paintings. Paintings must be ready for hanging, with appropriate framing and hardware to Arteast standards. Those who are bringing in a painting for the first time this year must sign an Arteast contract form. Blank contracts will be available at the library.

Fifteen percent (15%) of any sale is payable to Arteast for its operational budget.

When someone shows an interest in purchasing a piece, they will be advised to contact you directly to make the transaction. We prefer to leave all works hanging for the duration of each exhibition. If you must remove your work prior to the next change-over, please notify the appropriate coordinator, so the Librarian can be advised and take note of the authorized removal. Neither the Library nor Arteast takes responsibility for the security of works exhibited but reasonable care is taken to ensure their security. Remember that these are very public areas that put your work and name before the public. Do your part to encourage people to visit the North Gloucester, Orleans, St. Laurent Complex, and Blackburn Hamlet Libraries, where Arteast members exhibit on a continuing basis.

We look forward to seeing exhibitors on Tuesday, JANUARY 9, 2018.
