Worksohp; Kanata Civic Art Gallery

1. Workshops

By special request from the members, Grow with Art has been able to organized a one day workshop with our September speaker, John Archer. Presented in English.

Title: Expressive Landscape Painting Workshop for Arteast
When: Saturday November 17, 10:00 to 16:00
Where: St Columba Anglican Church, John Stewart Hall,
     24 Sandridge Rd, Ottawa, ON K1K 0A8

Workshop Leader: John Archer

This workshop will be of interest to accomplished painters who want to “shake up” their painting process, and to newer painters who are looking to develop a “looser” painting style. Although the focus is on landscape painting, the process can be generalized to other subject matter. The workshop leader will focus on the use of acrylic paints; however, watercolour or water soluble oil paint can also be used by participants.

The workshop will have two parts. The workshop leader will begin the first part in the morning with an explanation of the process he uses, with example works. This will be followed by a demonstration. Participants will then undertake a series of quick paintings using a reference photograph provided by the workshop leader. The goal is to “deconstruct” that image focusing separately on issues of composition, form, colour, line, value, etc. It is a process of discovering what the image could be as an expressive painting.

At lunch, there will be a discussion of participants’ morning exploratory work.

The objective of the second part of the workshop, after lunch, is to integrate what was undertaken in the morning with the creation of a more “finished” painting. The workshop leader will undertake a short demonstration of that process. Participants are encouraged to paint quickly and bring their work to a good state of completion in the limited time available.

During the final hour of the workshop participants can (if they wish) show their work (perhaps still in progress) for discussion.

Participants will bring their own painting supplies and easel (if they use one). Participants will be provided with sheets of Yupo for the first part of the workshop. A larger sheet of Yupo will also be available to participants for the second part. However, if you prefer to work on a different support medium for a possibly finished work, you may bring that with you.

We will need 8 participants to run this workshop. Arteast Members are subsidized by 50% of the cost of the workshop.

Registration closing date is Friday November 9, 5:00pm

To register send an email to Mary Ann Varley varleymaryann1@bell.net Send your cheque to Treasurer, Arteast, Box 5, Suite 260 , Shenkman Arts Centre 245 Centrum Blvd, Orléans, ON K1E 0A1

"Principles That Govern Great Art" with Brian Turner

A successful piece of art begins long before we put the paint on our brushes
As we plan our masterpiece do we know and have we considered and incorporated fundamental principles that govern great art?
Among other things these include composition, shape, contrast and color.
In our evening together we will look at each of these 4 principles with an emphasis on composition.
The presentation itself will be an interactive conversation using power point examples to illustrate and test our knowledge of these fundamentals.
Bring your questions and insights and we'll see you then.

Arts Night is held on the last Friday of each month from September to June at The First Unitarian Congregation of Ottawa, located at 30 Cleary Ave. in the west end of Ottawa, off Richmond Rd. and one stop-light block east of Woodroffe Ave. These popular events which started in 2003 begin at 7:30 pm with an "open mike" a time when members of the audience are encouraged to give up to a five-minute presentation of any art form. We then present three guest artists, one each in the literary, visual, and musical arts, who share their particular art form for approximately 20 minutes, and after all the presentations, converse with, and answer questions from the audience. This event is a show and tell, the when and why of their artistic creations.

Love Yourself Workshop with Suzanne Valois

Embrace the face that greets you in the mirror each morning and dispel your self-critic through positive reinforcements while drawing it out! This workshop was developed to improve observational skills but perhaps more importantly to become mindful of the messages that we often feed ourselves about ourselves. Draw your own self portrait (with a lot of guidelines to help you get there) while enjoying soothing positive, meditative affirmations. See the difference that it makes in the lines and expression of your face which is indeed mirrored in your soul. No experience is necessary – just an open mind!

Saturday, October 20, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.
Dance Studio, Shenkman Arts Centre, Orleans
$50/members; $60/non-members (All materials are included)

Suzanne Valois is a certified Expressive Arts practitioner, teacher, artist and founder of the Art of Being Human, who has been committed to helping individuals uncover and value their authentic voice through Creative Expression, for personal and global wellbeing. Suzanne currently works with the City of Ottawa, the University of Ottawa, and the Ottawa School of Art, offering workshops on Creative Expression for groups and individuals, creating and promoting programs using VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) and Art for Health.

Samedi, 20 octobre : 13h30 – 17h 30

The Basics of Shading in Graphite

Saturday, October 13th
Time: 10 am til 3 pm
Fee: $65
NO previous drawing experience is necessary!
Note: Space is limited – ONLY 6 spots available! This class won’t be offered again until 2019!

Discover the true magic of pencils in this single day, 5 hour workshop, which is designed to introduce you to the tools used by pencil artists who work in a realist style. Learn everything you need to know about the various tools required to work in graphite, how the different pencil grades behave and how to wield them to achieve particular results. Besides gaining an understanding about all the various tools that help create the magic, you will also learn the real secret behind achieving those beautifully smooth blended tones that so many artists struggle to perfect.

No previous drawing experience is necessary for this workshop . . . but because this class teaches fundamental, foundational knowledge for working with graphite in a realistic style, it is a pre-requisite for many of my other classes and workshops.

Michael Wilcox School of Colour Seeks New Canadian Rep

After many years of working with the Michael Wilcox School of Colour (MWSOC) I am planning on retiring at the end of this year. I am looking to find a replacement for myself so that the Canadian Office does not have to close.

The position is best suited for an artist who understands the MWSOC colour theory, or who is committed to learning it, which is actually amazingly easy. My medium is acrylics but it also works in oils, watercolours and any other medium where colours are mixed to produce new colours. I also use the colour theory in my silk scarf workshops, for mixing dye colours.

The position entails filling orders from the MWSOC website and Amazon Canada, for books, paints, brushes and home study courses, shipping them via Canada Post. In Ottawa we also have a local market of students who make direct purchases.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity of doing demos and workshops with local arts organizations, as well as offering their own workshops, classes and events.

Artists' conferences also offer opportunities to increase income by promoting and selling MWSOC products. The new rep will be able to take advantage of the many opportunities that will present themselves, to promote and sell MWSOC products.

Income is commission based on sales, plus all expenses like shipping materials, postage etc are reimbursed. Monthly reports need to be submitted for the commissions and expenses and twice a year an inventory of current stock is required to be submitted.

I've enjoyed my years with MWSOC, plus, as an art teacher, I have found it increased my recognition in the arts community and with students.

If you are interested please contact me directly to find out more.

Thanks and best wishes,
Susan Ashbrook,
susan@schoolofcolour.com
