2. Members Announcements

Jessie Parker announces the launch of her first Paperback Book Money Smarts for Visual Artists: Secrets, Surprises and Essentials, published by Amazon, November, 2015. This book would not have been possible without the input of Arteast members who took her seminars, which she gave on the same topics a few years back. The content arising from their intelligent and pertinent  feedback and questions were critical to the content of this book. The seminars on financial matters evolved into the eBooks, which in turn have lead on to the paperback (with much redesign and updating). Many thanks to Arteast

With the critical info here, visual artists learn art related financial secrets and surprises not generally revealed in art training courses. This book is also useful for self-employed designers, commercial artists and commercial photographers. And Canadian artists living abroad where they are unlikely to be able to get advice on Canadian tax issues.

 In Part I, the practical financial day to day nitty gritty basics are made easy to understand. In Part II, what expenses can and can’t be claimed and how and why are explained. And in Part III, the audit is demystified. What triggers an audit, the artist’s rights, the procedures, and how to win an audit are revealed.

The artist can use this book as a guide for DIY and/or as a basis for fruitful collaboration with accountants. Info is based on Canadian law, but also useful for countries based on British law (UK, USA, AU, NZ ). The book is available at www.amazon.com/author/jessieparker

Kerstin Peters would like to invite you to two of her upcoming events:

On Saturday, December 5, 2015 from 11 am to 3 pm, she holds her third annual Open House at 1270 Kinsella Drive in Cumberland, ON, K4C 1A9. She is looking forward to showing her art in the comfort of her own house.

On December 13, 2015 from 4 to 6 pm, she will be at Tyros Shawarma Lebanese Restaurant at 5929 Jeanne d'Arc Boulevard South, Orléans, ON K1C 6V8, for the Meet the Artist” event. You will also be able to try some of the great food the restaurant has to offer

Kerstin is showing a wonderful mix of her acrylic and oil paintings celebrating the beauty of Canada's winter in this solo exhibition. The exhibition Winter Wonderlandruns until January 8, 2016.

3. Communiqué

Arteast's hard-copy, quarterly newsletter—Communiqué—is popular with our members, but did you know that it is also available on our Web site at http://arteastottawa.com/newsletter.php? A notification when a new issue is released is communicated via the weekly Arteast Digest. Posting of the Web version may be viewed in full dazzling colour, at least two weeks before the print version (black and white) is delivered by Canada Post. With rising postal costs, some members have requested that they be removed from the mailing list for the printed copy. Other advantages of going with the online Communiqué are:
- reduces printing and envelope costs;
- makes Arteast more "green";
- no more hunting for misplaced issues (Arteast's Web site has the current and all back issues).
Printed copies will be available at our monthly Grow With Art meetings and the Promenade Arteast gallery at the Shenkman Arts Centre. If you prefer to read the newsletter online, please e-mail us at editor@arteastottawa.com to have your name removed from the newsletter mailing list.

- réduire les coûts de l’imprimé et de l’enveloppe;
- Arteast plus ‘vert’;

Arteast Volunteers Needed - Communiqué - Arteast Open Studio - CARFAC Ontario Fraud Alert - Nuit Blanche - Supporting Arteast Activities - AOE Announcements

1. Arteast Volunteers Needed

ARTEAST NEEDS YOU
(URGENT NEED FOR - SECRETARY - see below / BESOIN URGENT - SECRETAIRE - voir en bas)

Arteast is run solely by volunteers, members like you who contribute a little of their time to ensure that the organization can provide its many programs and run its exhibition venues. Without the help of its members in volunteer roles, Arteast would not be the dynamic organization it is.

Two members have recently stepped down from their volunteer roles and the following positions need to be filled as soon as possible. Arteast needs your help. Get involved to keep Arteast fresh and strong.

SECRETARY (needed by mid September):
The Secretary of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors attends the Committee and Board meetings (eight times a year; Tuesday evening; next meeting in September) and records the minutes of these meetings. This person doesn't need to be a professional writer but should have good writing skills. The former Secretary is willing to provide orientation and guidance to the incoming Secretary.

GROW WITH ART (GWA) LEAD COORDINATOR
This person leads a team of members in organizing the monthly GWA meetings, the annual bus trip to Montreal and other activities, such as workshops, as opportunities present themselves. The current members of the team are all experienced and will provide excellent support to their lead. In addition, the former Lead Coordinator plans to remain with the team and will be able to guide and advise the new lead.

FUTURE NEED FOR VOLUNTEER - VICE PRESIDENT

Arteast needs a member to step forward to take on the role of Vice President in January 2016. You can make an important contribution to your organization and help shape Arteast's future by joining the Executive in this capacity. The key purpose of the VP is to support the President and assist that person with their duties. It is not essential to have professional experience as an executive or a manager but you should have organizational skills, good judgement and common sense....attributes that we all develop from life's experiences. You have what it takes and your organization needs you for VP.
If you are interested in helping in these capacities, please contact me at president@arteastottawa.com or 613-830-1829.

Lynne Alsford
Vice President and
Acting President

- réduire les coûts de l’imprimé et de l’enveloppe;
- Arteast plus ‘vert’;

4. CARFAC Ontario Fraud Alert

FRAUD ALERT: Please share far and wide! We have just recently been alerted to a scam in which an artist in Toronto was approached by a "buyer" online. The cheque that arrived bore the name of a local company. When the artist contacted them to verify the purchase before cashing the cheque, it turned out that the company had had a batch of cheques stolen. As independent business people who can have an emotional stake in a transaction, artists are particularly vulnerable and often the target for fraud. Here are some tips for spotting scams:
- Don’t let a buyer rush you into anything!
- The cheque should be for the exact amount agreed upon. - Research who you are dealing with: verify their name, address, telephone number; consider checking with their local Better Business Bureau and Credit Bureau.
- Insist on a written contractor agreement detailing the conditions of the sale.
- It is extremely important that you have your bank verify the funds before you ship the work. This process is called “cheque authentication." It can take a few days and there may be a charge for the service.
- Better yet, make it a matter of course to accept only certified cheques. - Never accept any transaction where the buyer asks you to keep the transaction a secret from your bank.
- If you do receive a cheque from a known scammer, take the cheque, the envelope it came in, and copies of the email you received to the Commercial Crimes Division of your local police

6. Supporting Arteast Activities

Dear Members,

These are exciting times for visual artists in Arteast. Our organization is seeking sponsors for our various activities celebrating our 25th anniversary.  Arteast is a highly active, not-for-profit visual arts organization in Eastern Ontario. While our focus is on supporting visual artists in the Orléans area, we have members throughout the region. Our members range from professionals, with international reputations, to emerging artists and non-professionals. Supporting the visual arts is an important community builder and we look to like-minded people to help us make this year a success.

Several events are planned for our Silver Anniversary and we hope you will be able to support us by attending the events and possibly making either a financial donation or gift to support the local visual artists in your community.
Arteast would give you or your company full recognition in all its publicity for the chosen scheduled event. This would include a logo on print material and a link on our Website for 12 months.

1. You could choose to make a modest gift as a door prize for our upcoming Annual Juried Awards Show on September 26th,part of our 25th anniversary celebrations

Or our 25th Gala event being held on November 24th, 2015

2. You might consider giving a cash prize of $75 or $50 for our upcoming Annual Juried Awards Show on September 26th, 2015

3. You could support our Gala (November 24) with a gift of $100, $150, or $200

4. or provide $1,000 for full corporate naming and publicity for the Gala event.

We hope that you will consider this worthy endeavour in recognition and support of local visual artists.

Cher Membres

- reduces printing and envelope costs;
- makes Arteast more "green";

- réduire les coûts de l’imprimé et de l’enveloppe;
- Arteast plus ‘vert’;

The themes and media of the winners are very different, highlighting the diversity and range of NFAL member artists:
