Robbie Larivière, street artist, enlivens the urban streetscape — and makes people pause. He shares his mission to disrupt rushing through a commercial strip and staring at your phone with his playful and family-friendly art and, he explains how opportunities for urban artists have grown in recent years.

Robbie Larivière, artiste de rue, embellit le paysage urbain et demande aux gens de faire une pause. N’importe, au travers de son art ludique et enjoué, ses personnages aux couleurs vibrantes chamboulent tout ce qui nous est des plus familiers lorsque nous regardons nos téléphones et nous nous empressons dans les centres commerciaux. Il explique également comment les occasions pour les artistes urbains se sont développés au fil de ces dernières années.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ARTISTS - PAL OTTAWA IS TAKING APPLICATIONS FOR APPARTMENTS

Dear fellow senior artists and arts workers,

Has the word reached you? Do you know about PAL Ottawa? There has been so much overwhelming news lately, and now we want to reach out to you again, because you ought to know, and let your 55+ artistic colleagues know.

PAL Ottawa is now accepting applications for an 80 unit apartment building in central Ottawa, opening sometime in 2023. This residence will give its tenants access to lower rents, a good working environment, and a place to show your work.

Do you ever have to worry about rent? Do you have friends who struggle to make their rent? Did you know:

Average annual income for an artist in Ontario is $17,300, which is below the poverty line. The median rent for a one-bedroom in Ottawa is $1,450 (Padmapper, April 2020).

You really might want to get on to this now, because if the history of PAL Toronto and PAL Vancouver holds true, there will be a massive waiting list before long. Five year wait for PAL Toronto.

These PALs are beloved by the arts communities, not just because so many senior arts workers are given a financial break, but because they have become centres for artistic activity. I guarantee that in three to four years you will come to see what a gift PAL Ottawa is for the senior arts workers in the city.

If you sign up, there is no obligation on your part. You don’t even have to be 55+ now. You can move down the Waiting List if you’re not ready to move in when we open. Or you can give your space to the next fellow arts worker in line. Think of it as insurance for your future.

But do sign up. And please tell your colleagues. The Waiting List is over half full. The time is now.

Bhat Boy, community activist and founder of "Art in the Park", shares how his strong sense of community translates into his unique style of painting. He will talk about his enjoyment engaging the imagination of spectators and how his inclusion of Nuns and Dragons in his work relates to preconceived ideas about individuals and the darker side of the male psyche.

2. Changeover Reminder for Orléans Library Exhibition is on March 3, 2020


It's time to change the exhibition of members' artworks on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Orléans Library Branch, 1705 Orléans Blvd., Orléans, Ontario.

New artworks will be on exhibition until May 5, 2020.​

Please retrieve the works that are currently hanging and/or bring in new paintings (or other two-dimensional art).

Group show at the OGPC Gallery.

New group show at the OGPC Gallery at the Nepean Creative Arts Centrel/ Centre des arts créatifs de Nepean, 35 rue Stafford Rd (Bells Corners), January 9-March 5, 2020. The OGPC is a connective of over 40 printmakers in the Ottawa-Gatineau region and offers a permanent studio with 3 presses for use by printmakers.

The theme of this show is BIG. Eleven artists are exhibiting 14 works that convey the idea of BIG not only through their physical size, but by addressing major issues, portraying huge subjects, or in their use of bold mark-making. The versatility of linocut as a medium is also showcased.

Nouvelle exposition du Collectif d’artistes-graveurs d’Ottawa-Gatineau. La thématique de cette exposition est Voir Grand! 11artistes y présentent 14 oeuvres qui incorporent l’idée d’un grand
concept, un sujet d’actualité important, ou tout simplement un grand format, des couleurs vibrantes ou des traits francs. La versatilité du linoléum comme médium y est mise en évidence.

In all things creative, what gets overlooked is the absolute uniqueness of every individual. Suzanne Warren Powell will provide an overview of some of the paths, people and ideas that affected her artistic journey.

Suzanne has been teaching Fine Art and mentoring in Creativity since 1985, through the City of Ottawa, regional School Boards, Art Associations and her own studio. Previously, she earned degrees in the Arts, Education and has Master’s degree in Educational Technology. As a result, she is well-known for creating and designing new and exciting classes in the fine arts.

Originally destined to be a performance musician, Suzanne learned to play musical instruments and sang in professional groups. However, she resumed a keen interest in painting and soon won several awards. Teaching offers quickly followed.

In 2001, Suzanne co-founded OMMA (Ottawa Mixed Media Artists) with two of her students to further the awareness of, and showcase Mixed Media painting which she had been teaching for several years. OMMA currently exhibits throughout the capital region. On its inception, Suzanne was honoured with the title of permanent artist/mentor for OMMA.

Her love of nature and a Zen approach to life and creativity has led Suzanne into the arts and culture of the Far East. She practices Miksang photography, a form of meditative Tibetan Dharma art and writes Haiku poetry. Suzanne lives on a large rural property which features trails through meadows, woods and wetlands. This untamed landscape renews her artistic vision every day.

Recently, Suzanne has been teaching Wabi Sabi art (the Japanese aesthetic branch of Zen philosophy), Japonisme and Expressive Drawing. This presentation will be in English.

2. Workshop - Cancelled


Due to unforeseen circumstances, the palette knife workshop scheduled for Saturday October 26 with Hamid Ayoub , has been cancelled. Arteast hopes to reschedule this workshop at a later date.



3. Members' News


One Day Soapstone Carving Workshop

Learn how to carve Soapstone using hand tools. This course is for adults only. No previous experience is necessary. Students will be guided by the instructor through the carving process of cutting, shaping, sanding and polishing Soapstone to produce a sitting bear. Tools and materials are provided. Students are responsible for personal protection: safety glasses, gloves (optional), closed toe shoes. Dust masks are provided. Coffee and water will be provide as well but participants are responsible for their own lunches. Feel free to contact me if you would like more information.

Course fee – $120.00 plus tax.

Experience level – Adult beginner to intermediate, no experience required.

This year’s Baz’Art festival will be November 23 and 24, 2019 in the Shenkman Center in front of Promenade Arteast. Arteast artists will demo and display one or two small works. Artists are encouraged to show and tell regarding your art and to encourage interested audience members discover our Arteast membership and activities.

Arteast will have 3 6ft. long tables set up in front of the Arteast Promenade. We will needs 24 artists to demo their skills an the various times listed below; 2 artists will share one long table: Table top easels only and one or 2 small works to display. You may bring your business cards and flyers.

Saturday November 23rd:
- 11:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. 6 artists needed

Sunday November 24th:

Arteast Digest: Promenade Exhibit and Reception, Grow with Art

1. Promenade Exhibit and Reception

The public is invited to an opening reception for "Autumn Inspiration – Inspiration d’automne" - the latest show to be presented by Arteast Ottawa. The reception will take place on Sunday, September 29th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the ground floor of the Shenkman Arts Centre, 245 Centrum Boulevard, Orleans.

The exhibition runs from September 26th to November 26th, 2019.

Based on the theme of Autumn, this show will present the works of 30 members, comprising 19 paintings and 11 stone sculptures of adorable bears. The paintings feature a wide range of subjects in various media. The bears were produced by Arteast members at a workshop with local, award winning sculptor and Arteast member Patrick Imai. Each participant worked on and finished a soapstone bear. Participating artists will be present to discuss their work.

Le public est invité au Vernissage de l’exposition "Autumn Inspiration – Inspiration d’automne" présenté par les membres d’Arteast Ottawa. La réception aura lieu le dimanche 29 septembre de 13h à 15h au niveau 1 du Centre des Arts Shenkman, 245 Boulevard Centrum, à Orléans.

Les participants de cet atelier seront présents pour discuter de leur travail.

Jeanne Vaillancourt cherche à traduire dans ses oeuvres les impressions que suscitent en elle la nature qui l’entoure, ses voyages en Europe et en Asie, ou la vie tout simplement. Sa passion pour la gravure et l’impression se perçoit dans ses nombreuses années de pratique et de perfectionnement. Spécialiste de la gravure à l’eau forte, un procédé de gravure sur une plaque métallique à l’aide d’un mordant chimique, elle aime aussi expérimenter avec la linogravure ainsi qu’avec les techniques mixtes.

4. Blackburn Library Exhibition


The Blackburn Library in conjunction with Arteast is proud to present an exhibition of
two different streams of Linda Foley’s art. The first is comprised of an organic medium made of beeswax and dammar resin called, “encaustic”. One piece is inspired by Dr. Ali Arya’s (Carleton University) research into using avatar based multi-modal in virtual environments. In this piece, among other things, the main character, “The Brain” (from the cartoon “Pinky and the Brain”), is transferring his intelligence to his larger than life avatar with the hope that his invincible archetype will fulfill his ambition for world domination. Incidentally, this piece received the Best Artwork Award at the first Ottawa Creative Reactions event, “where art meets science”. The smaller encaustic pieces are parodies that also include popular cartoon characters mirroring Linda’s sense of humour. The second stream of her works are large abstract acrylic paintings inspired by industrial settings. While each collection is drastically different, both represent the artist’s varied interests.


This is a unique opportunity for the public to enjoy, encourage and support local artists in their community as well as engaging with the Blackburn Library.

La bibliothèque de Blackburn en conjointement avec Arteast est fière de présenter une exposition de deux volets représentant l’art de Linda Foley. Le premier est constitué d’un médium organique créer à partir de cire d’abeille et de résine dammar appelé « encaustique ». Une des œuvres est inspirée par les recherches du Dr. Ali Arya (Université de Carleton) qui porte sur l’utilisation de multimodalités basé sur des avatars dans des environnements virtuels. C’est une occasion unique pour le public de profiter, d’encourager et de soutenir les artistes locaux dans leurs communautés et de s’engager avec la bibliothèque de Blackburn.

Arteast Digest: Annual Critique Night, Plein Air Events

On Tuesday June 25, 2019, member artists are invited to bring one piece of unframed, unsigned work or a digital photo uploaded on a computer stick or disc in a jpeg format to the Annual Critique Night. We will have the computer and projector. We only have 70 minutes so it will be on first come basis.

Feeling shy….. come along and see what others are up to and join the fun anyway! See you Tuesday!

Donata Szafian will help members with suggestions on the work they present.

Donata Szafian is a classically-trained figurative artist. Her formal art education is rooted in Hungary. She obtained her BFA in Sculpture, followed by a BA in Industrial Design and MA in Jewellery Design.

Having her background in both fine art and design gives Donata a practical and problem solving mind-frame. This shows in her positive and constructive approach to critiquing artwork.

Her constant drive to learn and take her artwork to higher standards took her to New York to study under the guidance of Nelson Shanks, and recently to Florence to study with Michael John Angel.

Nous aurons un ordinateur et un projecteur sur place. Puisque nous avons seulement 70 minutes, premier arrive, premier servit.

Donata Szafian commenteras les oeuvres des membres qui présenteront une oeuvre.

Donata Szafian est une artiste figurative. Elle a étudiée en Hongrie d’ou elle a obtenue son baccalauréat en beaux-arts en sculpture, suivie d’un baccalauréat en design industriel et d’une maîtrise en joaillerie.

Avoir son expérience dans les beaux-arts et le design donne à Donata un esprit pratique et de résolution de problems qui lui sont utile dans son approche positive et constructive de critiquer les œuvres d’art.

Son intérêt constant pour apprendre et rendre son œuvre d’art à des normes plus élevées l’emmena à New York pour étudier sous la direction de Nelson Shanks, et récemment à Florence pour étudier avec Michael John Angel.

2. Plein Air Events

In 2020, one of the exhibitions on the Promenade wall, Shenkman Arts Center, will be dedicated to those who have participated in one of three (3) Arteast sponsored plein air events. Artists will be selected on a first come basis once the call is announced in the Digest and Website early in 2020. Art work will have to have been either created on site or derived from studies or photographs taken during the events. Artworks will also have to fit within the size parameters for a regular Promenade exhibition.

The dates for the sponsored plein air events are as follows: 

• Thursday, June 13: Trip to Montreal Botanical Garden (past)
• Thursday, July 4 (rain date July 11th) 10 am to 3pm: Mer Bleue (http://ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places/mer-bleue)
• Saturday, July 20 (rain date Sunday July 21st) 10 am to 3pm: Danielle Beaulieu’ garden in Cumberland (http://www.daniellesgarden.ca)

Note that for the July 4th event, we will be joining the Ottawa Plein Air Adventures group. There are no costs associated with the last two dates listed.

For each of the events, artists are responsible for bringing:

• Painting / Drawing Supplies
• Camera / Binoculars (if required)
• A lunch and drinks
• Hat / Sunscreen / Sunglasses
• Bug Spray
• Cushion / Chair / Camp Stool / Blanket
