Wet and Wild: towards Abstraction
A two day workshop in English, presented by Shirley Mancino

Shirley Mancino is renowned for her courageous exploration of mixed media and experimental techniques. “My soul ‘sings’ when I work loosely and abstractly. I love the ethereal quality that happens when I superimpose a figure on top of an underpainting, allowing the lower levels to shine through. This creates magic. A sought-after art instructor, juror and critic, she has won numerous prestigious awards for her art. Shirley delivers art workshops and presentations in her studio and throughout North America.

Program includes
Awaken your creative spirit and playful nature. White paper syndrome is common to artists at all levels. Not here! Learn to use liquid acrylics and collage elements as a vehicle for bold and loose self-expression. This exciting workshop helps both new and developing artists break free to explore new directions in acrylics, mediums and collage. By pouring, texturizing, layering, and pasting you will create stunning abstractions that you can then reincarnate into gorgeous representational works. You will learn how to effectively use the often confusing array of acrylic mediums and grounds. You will create your own stamps, templates and learn easy to use photo transfer processes. You will resurrect your failed watercolours using glazing, gesso and collage. Composition and design are an integral part of the session. The workshop includes helpful personal coaching, demonstrations and constructive group discussion.

Relax, play, and reconnect with your joyful creative

We need 17 people to run this workshop.

3. Communique
Le français suit...
Arteast's hard-copy, quarterly newsletter—Communiqué—is popular with our members, but did you know that it is also available on our Web site at http://arteastottawa.com/newsletter.php? A notification when a new issue is released is communicated via the weekly Arteast Digest. Posting of the Web version may be viewed in full dazzling colour, at least two weeks before the print version (black and white) is delivered by Canada Post. With rising postal costs, some members have requested that they be removed from the mailing list for the printed copy. Other advantages of going with the online Communiqué are:
  • reduces printing and envelope costs;
  • makes Arteast more "green";
  • no more hunting for misplaced issues (Arteast's Web site has the current and all back issues).
Printed copies will be available at our monthly Grow With Art meetings and the Promenade Arteast gallery at the  Shenkman Arts Centre. If you prefer to read the newsletter online, please e-mail us at editor@arteastottawa.com to have your name removed from the newsletter mailing list.

  • réduire les coûts de l’imprimé et de l’enveloppe;
  • Arteast plus ‘vert’;

Fletcher Wildlife Garden

Native Plant Sale

Saturday June 6 from 9:30am to 12:30pm

Visit the Fletcher Wildlife Garden for their Annual Native Plant Sale! Hundreds of beautiful, local wildflowers grow in the Ottawa area. These native plants attract and support local wildlife, including pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Loss of natural spaces has resulted in the decline of many species. FWG encourages growing native plants so that pollinators and other wildlife can find shelter and food. Their volunteers can advise about which plants suit your garden. A wide variety of native plants creates a garden that flowers throughout the summer and whose ecological balance makes herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers unnecessary.

Come and visit the demonstration backyard garden, pick up free plant lists and "how-to" info on gardening, and talk to the experts. The sale is located at FWG building on the east side of Prince of Wales Drive, just south of the Arboretum.
