Eagle Hunters: A Photographic Journey of Migration through Time with Louise Radmore
Tuesday, February 26, 2019
Announcements: 7:00 p.m.
Presentation: 7:30 p.m.
255 Centrum Blvd, Room 340, Orleans

Louise Radmore was one of eight photographers chosen by the BBC to join filmmaker and photographer Timothy Allen of Animal Planet to follow the Kazakh eagle hunters of Mongolia from February to March 2017. These Eagle Hunters are from a culture that time has forgotten. They live off-grid, in a brutal environment, in much the same manner as in the days of Genghis Khan.

To document these images, Louise was required to live with a Kazakh clan, during the challenging 150 km. winter migration through the frozen Altai Mountains in February, at temperatures of -30”celcius. She will share with us her amazing photographs and backstories, illustrating the daily life of a nomadic family at their spring camp in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia.

Louise has been a student of the photographic arts for almost 50 years, most recently studying with the School of Photographic Arts Ottawa for the past 8 years. She has travelled extensively to photograph life in its different cultural contexts.

4. Workshop: Stone Bear Carving

When: Saturday March 2, 09:00 to 17:00
Where: Smith and Barber Atelier
1520 Triole (Belfast and St. Laurent, behind Red Lobster)
Workshop Leader: Patrick Imai

Looking for a special handmade gift to give for a wedding or other occasion. Learn how to carve soapstone using hand tools. You will be guided by the instructor, Patrick Imai, through the soapstone carving process of cutting, shaping, sanding and polishing to produce a small bear, 3” x 3” x 5”. Tools and materials are provided.

Patrick Imai is a self-taught sculptor who has carved for more than 40 years. He has dabbled in other art forms: sketching, painting and glass (stained, fused, flamework), but he always returned to carving. He carved in wood, whittling small animals and figures with a pocket knife or with palm chisels, then in the late 90’s, Patrick tried stone carving. He was hooked by the ease of working with soapstone and by the colours and texture of the polished stone. He has since carved alabaster, serpentine, limestone, selenite and marble. Patrick has a passion for carving bears. He works to evoke human emotions and movement in his carvings.

Patrick is a member of Arteast, Arts Network Ottawa, the Kanata Civic Art Gallery and the National Capital Network of Sculptors.

6. Misc News

The Manotick Art Association has opened two workshops that they are hosting with Brian Atyeo to non members. The workshops will accommodate 14 participants each at a cost of $175.00 per workshop. Both workshops will be held at the City Archive Facilities, Room 115, 100 Tallwood Ave (Centrepointe). The workshops are for artists working in acrylic media no oil based paints.

Registration can be made at workshops@manotickart.ca and payment can be made via Pay Pal or e-transfer to the treasurer@manotickart.ca. Workshop fees will be returned if the workshop is cancelled or if you can be replaced from individuals on the waiting list.

Details on both workshops are listed below. Check the web to see Brian’s work.

Two Day Workshop “Abstract in Acrylic”
with Brian Atyeo – Monday and Tuesday, March 25th and March 26th, 2019 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

When we take advantage of conditions like distortion, exaggeration and multiple perspective, we open ourselves to that unique condition of self that allows abstraction to dominate our response to subject.

Brian will demonstrate a landscape the first day, and a jazz figure duet (Saxophones or piano) the second day. You will have time each afternoon to respond with your own painting and application of the techniques demonstrated.

Abstraction is more a way of thinking/response, than a way of painting or technique.

Two Day Workshop “Acrylic Landscapes”
with Brian Atyeo – Wednesday and Thursday, March 27th and 28th, 2019 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM

One of the problems landscape artists have – is effectively combining large powerful shapes with more passive/supportive shapes. The composition of a painting can be made more effective by combining these strong shape interactions, along with suitable tonal values.

We will also study colour temperature in composition, and look at the strong use of colour, both modified and unmodified.

Brian will demonstrate each morning, along with the lesson, and you will have time in the afternoon to respond with your own painting and application of the techniques demonstrated.
