1. Update - COVID-19 Stage 2 Reopenings

le français suit...

The City of Ottawa is cautiously reopening certain facilities and services, following public health guideline and restrictions. Limited access, reduced capacity limits and enhanced cleaning/disinfecting procedures are in effect.

Arteast Ottawa’s top priority has, is and always will be, the safety of our members and the community. As a result of the importance and complexities of implementing these guidelines, the Directors and the Management and Planning Committee have reviewed the calendar for 2020 and have decided on the following:

  • All hangings for new shows will be postponed.
  • The Annual Juried Awards Exhibition (AJAE) is postponed.
  • The Annual Volunteer Appreciation event is cancelled.
  • All Directors and committee meetings will be held online.
  • Grow with Art presentations and workshops will be offered online.
  • Open Studio will be held online, commencing in September.
Please contact the lead coordinators if you have any questions concerning your artwork in exhibits affected by the closures.

However, Arteast Ottawa continues to work on activities to remain active and relevant to benefit our members.  The following additional initiatives will be offered to provide opportunities for you to show, share and sell your work:
  • Armchair Art Show to feature members’ art for sale on the website. Registration and commission fees to Arteast will be waived. Full details are in the Digest and the website.
  • An Arteast Facebook Group will be launched to provide an informal forum for members to share ideas, work, etc. More details are posted in the Digest.
  • An Artists’ Gallery on the website to show and direct interest to our members’ websites, social media or other contact information.

We will continue to monitor the evolving pandemic situation closely and maintain flexibility to respond quickly and appropriately to changes in the emergency measures currently in place.  Please remember to read the Digest that you get in your email every week and visit the Arteast website regularly for news and updates.

2. Call for Art – Armchair Art Show / Appel à l’art - Exposition d’art dans votre fauteuil

le français suit...

As we had to postpone our annual Arteast Juried Awards Exhibition (AJAE) for this year due to the pandemic crisis, we are organizing a fun replacement virtual show. There will be no need to leave your favorite chair to participate as there is no drop off, no vernissage, and no pick-up.  Only a few simple rules.  This is a great opportunity to show and sell your art with no Arteast Commission.

This is a virtual and non-juried show and is open to Arteast Ottawa members whose membership is up-to-date only.

If you are not sure of your membership expiry date, contact the Membership Coordinator. To become a member, or renew your membership, please visit our Membership page.

Depending on the number of participants, more than one show may be put in place with a maximum of participants per show.  Registration is open from August 1 to 22 2020.  For further information and to register, please visit our website at Arteast Armchair Art Show.

If you have any questions about the Armchair Art Show contact Josée Bourassa and Cheryl Mattice.

*****************

3. New Arteast Facebook Chat Group

In response to a collective wish by our members to connect and exchange ideas about their artistic practice, a new Facebook group temporarily entitled “Arteast Ottawa Forum” has been created to address this need.   This added value online group will allow our highly motivated members to be more personally engaged with other members in real time.

To join this group, search “Arteast Ottawa Forum” in Facebook and request to join. At that time, it’s important that you read and accept the rules. A moderator will ensure that your membership is up-to-date and then admit you to the group.

Members will be able to vote online to determine a new name for this group. Feel free to make suggestions online until August 9th. Suggested names will be added to a poll that will open August 10th and close August 31st, 2020.

Moderators will play a key role in this new online group. We are seeking volunteers to:
  • Delete derogatory and disparaging messages, posts, comments, questions or those that go against any stated rules to foster a safe place for conversation.
  • Remove offending members from the group.
  • Remind members of the rules.

A good moderator must possess the following:
  • Ease in interacting with people.
  • Ability to remain impartial, open, and unbiased.
  • Flexibility.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Create comfort and trust.

If you are interested in becoming a moderator, please email  ArteastOttawa@gmail.com.

Join Arteast Ottawa Forum to be part of a supportive and caring community of shared interests!

Arteast Digest: Misc. News

Misc. News

Recently, Maryse Fillion, one of our members, undertook a unique initiative that she is repeating on July 3rd at Nector Gallery.

On June 8th, Maryse set up a 4ft x 8ft board in her driveway.  She invited people to provide words to be recorded on the board and then throw their leftover house paint at this board.  Participants included entire families, students of all levels, teachers, artists and neighbours. The final result included many colourful layers of fabulous texture providing a glimpse of the colours in people’s homes.

The final results represent the texture of a community during this time of confinement.

For additional information, please contact Maryse at Fillionm03@gmail.com.

2. Misc News

Erika Deruaz, an Arteast Ottawa member for many years, celebrated her 90th birthday on Sunday, June 21. Erika is no longer able to paint and has moved, with her husband Marcel, to a retirement residence. It would mean the world to her to hear from old friends, fellow artists, acquaintances and buyers so that she feels special and remembered. Please make this event even more special for her by having as many people as possible who remember her, send her a birthday email. If anyone needs her email address, please contact Susan Ashbrook at ashbrookcreative@gmail.com.

3. Win a digital copy of The Painter and The Thief - Revised Deadline

Elevation Pictures’ new movie THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF, is now available on demand and on digital. The company has generously given Arteast Ottawa four complimentary digital copies to give away to our members. This documentary follows a Czech naturalist painter Barbora Kysilkova and her extraordinary story of friendship with one of the thieves who stole her paintings from an Oslo art gallery. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and was part of the 2020 Hot Docs Festival selection. The Globe and Mail called it "the best documentary of the year". The film not only gives a great insight into the work and techniques of this talented painter, but also very cleverly shifts perspectives to show the vulnerabilities and struggles of two different souls and an inextricable bond that art creates between them.

For your chance to win a complimentary digital copy of the film, please email us with your response to the question "Why did you join Arteast Ottawa"? Your response will help us in planning our business strategy for the next three years. A draw for the winners will take place at the GWA online presentation on June 23rd. Please email your response to arteastottawa@gmail.com

Deadline for submissions is June 28, 2020.
