Figureworks is calling artists to submit for the 9th annual juried Figureworks Prize and award show. The submission deadline is September 30, 2018. Figureworks is an annual juried art prize and celebration of the art of the human form held in Canada’s capital, Ottawa. We believe in being inclusive and accept figurative works in all media from Canada and internationally. The show is open to all living artists working in all mediums who wish to submit recent works that represent the human form or parts thereof.

Our 2018 all-women jury is deeply connected to their local community while also making an impact on a national level. The jury is composed of Danuta Sierhuis, M.A., artist and Curatorial Assistant, Canadian Art at the National Gallery of Canada; Jennifer Macklem, multidisciplinary artist and Associate Professor in the Department of Visual Arts at the University of Ottawa; and Joanne Rycaj Guillemette, photographer and responsible for the Indigenous Portfolio in Private Archives acquisitions at Library & Archives Canada.

Our mission at Figureworks is to cultivate and exhibit art of the human form. We do this by providing an excellent opportunity to exhibit artwork of the human form and receive a significant cash prize. We are a volunteer-based not-for-profit organization. Entry fees and sponsorship go directly to operational costs and prize money. We don’t take any commissions on sales at the Figureworks exhibition — all the money goes directly to the artists.

Artists may submit online through the Figureworks website www.figureworks.org

Submission deadline is September 30, 2018.

Please note that we do have a reduced submission fee for students.

We are proud to acknowledge Wallack’s as the Figureworks 2018 presenting sponsor. Wallack’s has a strong tradition of supporting the arts, supplying professional art supplies through their stores, and representing artists through their gallery.

What is in it for the artists

Figureworks is more than an annual prize; it is a community of artists passionate about the human figure. Each year we come together to celebrate the figure through the Figureworks Prize. Artists will have their work reviewed by our professional jury and the opportunity to win cash prizes — $5000 was awarded last year. Those in the show will have their work displayed in Ottawa, Canada’s capital and be published on the Figureworks website. Artists may also sell their works at the show should they choose. Note that Figureworks takes no commission on sales.

On Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 11, 2018

Please retrieve the works that have been hanging for the past two months and/or bring in new paintings (or other two dimensional art) for the North Gloucester Library, 2036 Ogilvie Road, Ottawa, K1J 7N8.

The coordinators will be at the Library between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30.a.m. For those who are dropping off art work, please arrive between 10:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. so that your work can be documented and hung before 11:30 a.m.. For those who are picking up only, please arrive no later than 11:15 a.m.

These new pieces will hang for two months.

The next change-over will be on Tuesday, NOVEMBER 13, 2018.
If you are interested in exhibiting, an advance email, on or before Wednesday, SEPTEMBER 5, 2018 to Christine Gendron, christinegendron@sympatico.ca, indicating the number of works and their sizes, would be helpful. Or, just show up at the date, but risk being turned away.

Please be prepared to record your paintings with: Title, Medium, Size, and Price along with your name, phone number and e-mail. You can bring up to 3 paintings although, depending on the total number received, not all may be accepted. North Gloucester Library can accommodate 20 paintings. Paintings must be ready for hanging, with appropriate framing and hardware to Arteast standards. Those who are bringing in a painting for the first time this year must sign an Arteast contract form. Blank contracts will be available at the library.

Fifteen percent (15%) of any sale is payable to Arteast for its operational budget.

When someone shows an interest in purchasing a piece, they will be advised to contact you directly to make the transaction. We prefer to leave all works hanging for the duration of each exhibition. If you must remove your work prior to the next change-over, please notify the appropriate coordinator, so the Librarian can be advised and take note of the authorized removal. Neither the Library nor Arteast takes responsibility for the security of works exhibited but reasonable care is taken to ensure their security. Remember that these are very public areas that put your work and name before the public. Do your part to encourage people to visit the North Gloucester, Orleans, St. Laurent Complex, and Blackburn Hamlet Libraries, where Arteast members exhibit on a continuing basis.

We look forward to seeing exhibitors on Tuesday, SEPTEMBER 11, 2018.

ALERT: ART PURCHASE SCAM

All Arteast members are urged to beware of e-mail scams. One of our members had a recent experience with an e-mail from a person who wished to buy one of their artworks after seeing it on the member’s website. After an exchange of several e-mails, the member saw a lot of red flags, researched for scams of this type and ended the exchange before being defrauded.

There may be some variations on this scam but here are some common details of the e-mail exchanges:
  • A storyline such as: husband/wife has seen the artwork and really likes it; buyer wants to purchase it for their spouse;
  • Buyer is in a foreign country and plans to involve an outside shipper; scam might involve having shipper come to pick up the artwork;
  • Odd/complicated/suspicious arrangements to make the financial transaction instead of using methods such as PayPal or e-transfer;
  • Buyer establishes a tight timeline;
  • Message contains spelling, grammar and spacing errors creating impression that English is not the buyer’s first language.

Members are cautioned not to give out their bank or credit card information.

If you would like more information or advice on this type of scam, go to the following link:   www.artworkarchive.com/blog/don-t-be-fooled-by-email-art-scams-how-to-spot-and-avoid-fraud
